Fryer will not light? The five minute checklist

August 12, 2026

Most no-light calls on a gas fryer come down to the pilot, the thermopile, or the high limit. Here is the order to check them in.

A gas fryer that will not light is the most common hot side call we get, and about a third of them are fixed on the phone.

Check in this order

Gas supply: is the quick disconnect seated and the valve open? Someone pulling the fryer out to clean behind it is the usual culprit. Pilot: is it lit? If it lights but goes out when you release the knob, the thermopile is weak or dirty. High limit: if the fryer overheated recently, the high limit may have tripped. Some have a reset button behind the door.

When to stop and call

If you smell gas, if the burner lights with a bang, or if the flame is yellow and lazy instead of blue, stop. Those are combustion problems, not knob problems, and they are the kind of thing we want to see in person.
